She was Chair of Gender and Women’s Studies Department at Berkeley from 2008-2010. Her academic specialties are transnational and postcolonial feminist studies , religious nationalism and transnationalism, consumer culture, immigration and diaspora studies, Middle Eastern Studies and Iranian cultural politics and diasporas. She is best known for her work on Islamic nationalism and fundamentalism as byproducts of colonial modernity and modernization of patriarchies. ==Biography== She received a BA in Sociology from the University of Tehran, followed by a M.A. in Sociaology from the same university. She received a and PhD in Sociology from Université de Montréal in 1990, with a thesis "La pluralité des rapports sociaux : similarité et différence : le cas des Iraniennes et des Iraniens au Québec"〔(WorldCat )〕 She then engaged in postdoctoral studies at the University of California at Berkeley.
